As Miller pointed out in The Crucible (really about anti-American activities), we find witch hunts easier to initiate than balanced discussion, simply because balanced discussion take so long, and is far too democratic for people who don’t feel change is happening fast enough. We see the same thing with Black Lives Matter. Things aren’t moving fast enough, yet the other night, a man was defending the use of the “N” word by blacks even when it’s derogatory. “We’ve earned the right to use that word—not whites.” If a word—any WORD—represents the denegration of a people, how can it be RIGHT for some to use? Still, today it’s a “black” word, and books like Huckleberry Finn are being removed from school booklists. If children don’t know the state of racism at the height of segregation, then they will live in ignorance. And if any gesture or touch can be deemed sexual assault, soon we’ll forget what sexual assault really is. Someone posted on Facebook: “If all the supposed assaults are tried and all those guilty removed from their their careers, who will do their jobs?” One woman posted: “Women.” Very reminiscent of the Salem Witch Trials where women were charged with being witches by families wanting their land. Others were midwives. Salem had too many midwives. Some were accused of being witches (by other midwives, of course). Problem solved.
