As simple as it sounds, Ethan, it’s hard to find honesty in most posts. It’s a bit like “The Voice” where the judges advise contestants to “feel” what they’re singing. So much is about technique and range, similar to what we deal with writing articles here. We say, “Okay, I’m going to talk about my masturbating, and I’m really going to be honest about this.” They turn it into first person, figuring they’re letting the cat out of the bag. The rest proves to be pretty standard stuff, often lifted from someone else’s standard stuff. I’m amazed at how many people go through Medium, taking a subject they think is naughty, and then turn it into first person. I’d say forty-percent clearly haven’t had the experience themselves, the other sixty percent haven’t had the experience since their teens. I’m also amazed at how people figure first person doesn’t require research. They’re the expert because, why, it happened to them. That’s an opinion, which we know everyone can have. Anyway, good article, Ethan. You make some good points.

I did a poor imitation of Don Draper for 40 years before writing my first novel. I'm currently in the final stages of a children's book. Lucky me.
