Here’s a quote that sums up our disassociation with events happening in Washington these days: “Why are Republicans not turning on President Trump? Because they aren’t supporting him. They’re supporting themselves. He just shares the same brain rot.”
That’s not a bad analogy. It could even be the same brain rot that saw Richard Nixon impose 10 percent tariffs on Canada back in 1971, while withdrawing America from the gold standard.
Or William McKinley, who drove the economy into such a state of confusion with his tariffs, nobody knew if they were making money or losing it—including McKinley.
In both cases, their policies were ruinous, leaving businesses bankrupt, and trading partners looking elsewhere.
So why isn’t that happening now? Because Trump’s followers don’t know the difference between fiscal responsibility and sheep shearing.
From a historical perspective, it was stupid. They kept promising “good times ahead,” but it required building surpluses off the backs of the public. Once people…
