Good article, Benjamin. I turned down a publisher before I had any other offers, simply because when I asked why royalties were only paid annually, he said, “That’s when our accountant gets around to it.” It would be another two years before Yucca Publishing took on my book, and that was only because my agent, Peter Riva, started the company. Waiting is very tough, especially when you’re itching to be “known.” I had that myth crushed recently when Peter told me 2015 saw 650,000 new titles. In other words, forget being “known.” If you want to be a novelist, you’re better off doing it for love ’cause fame ain’t likely to happen (you’ll get struck by lightening first).

I did a poor imitation of Don Draper for 40 years before writing my first novel. I'm currently in the final stages of a children's book. Lucky me.
