Good post, Darius. I had a reader last week who wrote: “And so it goes. Hemingway won a Nobel Prize for literature and nobody’s heard of you.” I wrote back saying that Hemingway wasn’t an overnight success and there are proportionately way more writers today than back in Paps’s day. I ended by saying “You should read Carlos Baker’s biography of Hemingway. You’ll find it interesting. Maybe you won’t be such an asshole.” This caused a number of responses claiming I had “thin skin.” Shouldn’t assholes be told their assholes? Or is it self-evident? Let them paint their own autobiographies?

I did a poor imitation of Don Draper for 40 years before writing my first novel. I'm currently in the final stages of a children's book. Lucky me.
