I can safely say, at the moment, I earn more from my articles on Medium than I do with my book. It was launched four years ago by Skyhorse Press. I have international distribution, but my royalties wouldn’t by a week’s worth of coffee. Having international distribution may sound great, but that entails shipping books out to faraway places—and sometimes having them sent right back. With so many books on the market, the big outlets often send books back after only six months (often without the covers to save shipping costs). I’m in libraries all over the world. It doesn’t matter. I can’t even get my second book published until the first reaches a certain number of sales. Catch-22. even musicians (if they’re reasonably good) get a chance to tour. There will always be outlets for bands to play and earn from being out there, even doing small gigs. Small gigs can really help a musician (again, if they’re good). Writers aren’t typically good performers, even if we do readings and book signings. John Le Carré called readings “a flapping of wings.” It really doesn’t do much.

I did a poor imitation of Don Draper for 40 years before writing my first novel. I'm currently in the final stages of a children's book. Lucky me.
