Interesting post, Josh. What we ignored in advertising for most of the eighties up till now is one simple thing: honesty. Advertising in the sixties was successful (meaning it sold) because there was a “heart” behind it. The words, the ideas made people “feel.” Over time, advertising because slick. It became about being clever. Today, we use the mediums of social media and new technology to be even more clever. But all that’s happened is we’ve moved further and further from the “heart.” We don’t try to understand the consumer anymore, we simply want to “wow” them. Same with movies. We’ve lost what Frank Capra tried his whole life to perfect: That our human decency is the greatest gateway to our interest.
