My point, Avarielle, is that when a slave escaped, the slaves who stayed behind were treated more harshly. This was an attempt to keep other slaves from escaping. If the slave was caught, not only was he or she punished, the other slaves were, again, treated harshly so they wouldn’t think about escaping themselves. Slavery is about keeping the mind down as well as the body. I wasn’t talking at all about freedom. Please read the comment I was answering.
