Over-cooking seems to be common here. As I mentioned to Kurt Merlin Wintersteiner, if you read your stuff aloud and you’re out of breath, you’ve written too much and your sentences are long-winded. I used to teach about the “rhythms of writing,” where you read to the bedtrack of a song (get anything from karaoke iTunes). You should be able to move through your article (or story) at the same pace as the song, hopefully, with it sounding lyrical. I’ve done this with Hunter S. Thompson’s stuff and Jack Kerouac’s. It really does work. I wish more people tried this.
