Thanks for bringing up these points, Renée. I share your concerns. As I’ve mentioned in a few posts (I’ve never been in the Editor’s Picks, either, so I doubt I’ve been noticed), we’re providing content which I thought, with this subscriber channel, we might be getting some remuneration. Seems, instead, Medium wants us to pay for the privilege of being here. The same thing is being considered on other social media sites. Now, I try to be a constructive guy (if it’s okay to call myself a guy). Why doesn’t Medium create columns, similar to columns in a newspaper. We get a byline, we do our columns, if enough people read us, we get paid based on this readership. If we don’t get the readership, we don’t get paid. Seems simple enough. I realize this might take longer for Medium to monetize, but the subscription model, as it’s being described now, isn’t going to have a lot of takers and, frankly, I’m tired of people thinking writers should be giving away their stuff for free. I’m already thinking of putting my writing aside altogether. The numbers, the reward, just don’t justify all the hours and research I put into my pieces. Thanks for posting, Renée. Hope Medium reads your article. It’s a good one.

I did a poor imitation of Don Draper for 40 years before writing my first novel. I'm currently in the final stages of a children's book. Lucky me.
