The Alberta Con.
How Danielle Smith is building resentment while China waits smiling in the wings.
“I told them Pierre Poilievre was more in sync with the president and didn’t believe all that ‘woke’ nonsense.” Danielle Smith, Alberta premier, 2024
It seems resentment gets you more votes than lies or truth these days. Politicians used to choose one of the latter, but that was before resentment became so popular. Donald Trump took over the presidential office with more resentment up his sleeve than a pornographic magician. But there’s game for everyone.
Even Canada, where good sportsmanship used to be relatively common, is now taking resentment seriously, especially the Alberta premier, Danielle Smith. She’s an unexpected fan of Donald Trump, thrilled by his unconventional style, yet claiming she’s just a barometer of the people, not a populist or anarchist or whatever else Trump’s been called. She prefers to be less bombastic but, in some respects, she’s more.
In light of the recent election, with the Liberals winning a fourth term despite the Conservatives being favoured right up to the post, Smith has been on her own warpath.
She prefers to be less bombastic but, in some respects, she’s more.
