This is an excellent piece, Meagan, and beautifully written. If it causes some discomfort with readers, I suspect it’s because stories like this haven’t been part of the telling of American history. As a Canadian, I find it shocking. If I were an American, I’d find it embarrassing and sickening. Needless to say, I prefer fact over rhetoric. Rhetoric is such back-and-forth nonsense. History doesn’t lie, and like Henry Ford once said, “If we don’t understand history, then we are doomed to repeat it.” Thanks for educating a Canadian and giving me a perspective on this matter (one that definitely makes me feel more aware and better qualified to give an opinion).
