Two things, then I’ll leave it: Who told women to sit down and shut up about it? I’ve never heard of that. Secondly, WE are the ones telling young women that all catcalling is threatening, just as we’re teaching children that any stranger showing kindness is a predator. Better to safe than sorry, I’m sure, but we’re creating a generation of severe paranoia. A lot of catcalling is harmless. It’s just jerks thinking it’s cool. If you turned and walked up to them and said “whip it out,” they’d slink off into a convenience store. Again, I’m not trying to defend jerks, but I won’t live in a world, either, that promotes the idea that women are all weak, defenceless, innocents. In Europe, particularly societies that might still be called macho, girls learn how to deflect catcalls. They learn to speak out, take care of themselves, live in a world that isn’t perfect. To say we’ll simply eliminate all threats is like saying we’ll eliminate all bacteria. First of all, it’s impossible, second, without bacteria, we have no resistance. Remember War of the Worlds? Same premise.
