We all hate ourselves a little bit, Michael. It’s just who we are. Dating is supposed to confirm that “we’re not so bad.” If someone says “Wow, you’re great!” well, wouldn’t that be nice. Sure reduces the self-loathing, doesn’t it? The problem with most dates is they don’t say that. So we go on more dates, hoping someone says that. We date to feel a little less insecure by someone smiling—or even listening. A bad date is confirming that we’re right to hate ourselves. Saying you’re not going to date anymore is when you realize you’re getting consistent bad reviews. Stop dating and you don’t have to listen to anyone—sort of like Trump.

I did a poor imitation of Don Draper for 40 years before writing my first novel. I'm currently in the final stages of a children's book. Lucky me.
